NPS to Fund Free Meals for All Students Through October 2025

Northville Public Schools is committed to ensuring students continue to have access to healthy, nutritious meals without interruption. At its most recent meeting, the Northville Board of Education approved funding to cover free breakfast and lunch for all students through October 31, 2025, while the district awaits the finalization of the State of Michigan’s K-12 budget.

The K-12 budget bill includes funding for the Michigan School Meals program, which provides free breakfast and lunch to all students statewide. However, the state has not yet passed this budget, creating uncertainty for districts and families.

“We are frustrated that the state has placed districts across Michigan in this challenging position,” said Dr. RJ Webber, Superintendent of Northville Public Schools. “Our priority is to support our families and prevent any disruption to students’ access to meals. By taking this proactive measure, we can help provide stability for families as we await a decision from the state.”

October 2025 Plan if State Budget Is Delayed
If the state does not pass the budget by October 1, 2025, Northville Public Schools will cover the cost of free breakfast and lunch for all students during the month of October. This ensures students continue to have access to free meals while the district waits for state funding.

Plan After October 2025 if Budget Still Not Passed
If the state still has not passed the budget by November 1, 2025, schools will return to the standard meal eligibility process:

Student meals will be charged based on your family's approved eligibility: free, reduced-price, or full price.

To qualify for free or reduced-price meals under federal funds, families must complete a new Education and Nutrition Benefits Form (formerly known as the Free & Reduced application) as soon as possible.

Families are strongly encouraged to complete the form now to avoid any disruption in meal service should state funding not be approved in time.
