At today’s Homecoming Pep Assembly, Northville High School received a surprise visit from Special Olympics Michigan, announcing Northville Public Schools as one of the first Unified Champion School Districts in Michigan! This prestigious recognition honors the district’s commitment to inclusion and its growing emphasis on unified sports, inclusive activities, and peer leadership across all schools.
The crowd erupted with excitement as the announcement was made, celebrating the efforts of student leaders, staff, and the entire school community who have worked tirelessly to create an inclusive environment for all students. In 2018, Northville High School was first named a Unified Champion School, and in 2021, the school received National Banner Recognition for meeting 10 national standards of excellence. Today’s district-wide recognition marks another significant milestone in Northville’s ongoing journey toward inclusion.
One of the key figures in driving these initiatives is Kelsey Mikiciuk, a special education teacher at Northville High School. For years, she has championed inclusivity, building strong partnerships with Special Olympics Michigan to ensure Northville’s unified sports and inclusive programs continue to grow. In recognition of her outstanding leadership, Kelsey was surprised with the Unified Champion Schools Leadership Award from Special Olympics Michigan during the assembly.
The recognition as a Unified Champion School District is a reflection of Northville’s deep commitment to fostering a culture of belonging and inclusion. As more schools across the district embrace unified sports and inclusive activities, the entire Northville community looks forward to continuing its progress toward a future where all students can thrive, both academically and socially.
